Having lived in Wilmington for the last 20 years, I have been through several hurricanes… It seems like each time we have forgotten something and it wasn’t until the middle of the storm that we realized it was TOO late to take care of it, so I wanted to send this out for any of you that are new to the area but more importantly…. NEW to hurricanes! Hope it helps you to “Batten down the Hatches” and be prepared to ride out a storm!

Batten down the hatches!! She’s a ‘blowin’ out there!!
The beauty of a hurricane is, there is time to prepare!! If the storm changes its path…Hey, you were ready!! Here are a few tips for Hurricane Preparedness.
1. First, get important papers and special photos in order and in secure plastic. Identification is difficult and time-consuming to replace, so be sure to include social security cards, birth certificates, school diplomas and titles or deeds to property. Photos for special occasions or loved ones often cannot be replaced, so including these is important was well.
2. Think ahead and take video or photos of your property. Whether your stay or leave, this will help you with any insurance claims for damages that may need to be filed.
3. If staying with relatives is not an option, consider booking a room in a hotel or motel in a nearby town or state. Make sure to get directions and put them in the car ahead of time. It is easy to forget that piece of paper in the rush out the door. A cheaper route might be to find temporary hurricane shelters. Usually nearby towns not in the direct path of the storm will provide these for people in need.
4. Unfortunately, it is unlikely that your pet will have a place in a hotel or motel. Keep this in mind and try to find alternate housing like a boarding kennel in areas outside of the path of the storm.
5. Designate a spot in a hall closet or other location in your home, to keep a bag of clothes for each person in your household. Make sure to include sleeping gear if you plan on staying in a temporary shelter.
6. Along with overnight clothes, consider stocking your Hurricane Kit. See a list of items on the attached Hurricane Preparedness Checklist. If you plan to evacuate your home, use this list to pack what you will need for a few days away. Other items will be needed upon your return, so be sure these are stored together for easy access when you get back to your home.
7. Count on the power being out for at least a day or two (maybe longer!) Remember that ATMs will be non-operating, so make sure you have cash to see you through. With no power, many of our means of entertainment will be on hold, so cards, board games, etc. may come in handy. You may need these if you stay at home or in shelter.
8. If you do stay home to tough out the storm, stay downwind. This means if the wind is hitting the living room windows, go to the room opposite the living room.
9. Plywood is a “hot” commodity for those who decide to stay. Boarding up windows can be a wise decision, and if affordable having a professional fit your home for hurricane shutters.
10. Finally, STAY INSIDE! However tempting it may be to video the storm or take photos, be sure to do so from inside where it is safe and dry!!

The Cape Fear Blue Marlin Tournament would like to welcome all our sponsors, fishermen, participants, and spectators to this, our 38th annual event. This year looks to be a great time to be had by all. Once again, the headquarters and weigh station will be at Wrightsville Marina.

Masonboro Island NC on July 4th

Masonboro Island is an 8 mile long uninhabited island on the southern North Carolina coast between Wrightsville Beach and Carolina Beach and is part of the National Estuarine Research Reserve. Masonboro Island, only accessible by boat, is enjoyed by campers, surfers, anglers, and bird-watchers alike. The reserve consists of about 5000 acres, which about 4400 acres are tidal marsh and mud flats. The most northern end at Masonboro Inlet is the most popular area with its sandy beaches and protected waters. Any summer weekend you will see many boaters and campers prepared for a few days on the beach with tents, grills and water toys in to Masonboro Island, normally calm and peaceful, has recently seen a little too much partying and alchohol consumption on big Holiday weekends such as July 4th and Labor Day. Boaters from all over the Southeast join in on a big party weekend. So, if you plan to visit the island, be sure to keep your alcohol consumption to a minimum and take your garbage with you.

Masonboro Island is also located only minutes from the mainland where you will see prestigious waterfront communities with private docks, marinas, and boat ramps for homeowners. One of the most conveniently located communities to Masonboro Island is Shinn Point, located straight across from Masonboro Inlet, which is one of the most protected inlets on the East coast. From Shinn Point, you can be in the ocean in just minutes for a day of deep sea fishing or just cruise over to Masonboro Island and relax in the sun.

Several years ago I traced my father’s side of the family back to my Great-Great Grandfather. His name was Albert E. Badger and he was a shipping captain from Cape Cod, Massachusetts. He moved to the shores of North Carolina sometime in the 1840’s. I found his family in the 1850 NC Census where it listed them as residing in Washington, NC.

After researching and learning about my ancestors who sailed the same waters as Blackbeard (only 100 years later), I often wonder what “pirate” tales he heard down on the docks or at the local tavern!

I can only imagine… sitting around a bonfire in the dark waiting to hear another “back in the day” tale that he could have navigated through a story of theft and mayhem on the high seas that would have you believing that he had encountered Blackbeard himself!

The Hoggard Vikings Girls Soccer Team knocked off the #1 highschool team in the NATION last night as they beat Raleigh’s Leesville Rode 1-0 in a sudden death after 2 ten minute overtimes ended scoreless on their home field here in Wilmington, NC. Sarah Downing, the freshman goalie played brilliantly in spite of the pressure she was facing. She was focused and foiled at least 5 scoring attempts from the opponents. The game winning goal came off of a corner kick that was deflected to the left and Sarah Clinard was there to kick it up and into the right corner just beyond the front goal post.

They head into the 4A State Championship game on Saturday at NC State to play North Mecklenburg (Charlotte, NC). This is the first time in the programs history to make it to the championships and they are going into it with a record of 25-0. Good Luck Ladies…Bring Home the Gold!!!

Wilmington has been home to several outstanding athletes such as Meadowlark Lemon, one of the famous Harlem Globetrotters, Trot Nixon, who was a standout baseball player at New Hanover Highschool and played for the Boston Redsox, Roman Gabriel who played football at New Hanover Highschool, NC State and played in the NFL for many years. Sugar Ray Leonard, the boxing champion who won 6 world titles was born here in Wilmington and probably our most famous athlete with the younger generation is Michael Jordan, the basketball super-star hailed as the greatest basketball player of all time! Michael attended Laney Highschool and played for the Buchaneers during the 79-80 and 80-81 seasons before heading off to UNC in Chapel Hill. In 1984, afer winning The College Player of the Year title he was drafted by the Chicago Bulls. He is a 6 time NBA Champion and a 2 time Olympic Gold Medalist. I have seen many star athletes play in their respective sport but I am thrilled to say that I have watched him play a home game in Chicago.

As you can see Wilmington has produced some talented individuals but somewhat lacking in team championships. In the past, it has been hard to compete with the Raleigh/Greensboro/Charlotte area schools because of the larger populations, they have a bigger talent pool when choosing the athletes for their teams.

As more and more people have discovered Wilmington and moved here to get out of the rat race of the “big city” in the last 10 years, our athletic programs have progressed and we are able to compete with athletic teams across the state. In 2007, The Hoggard Viking Football Team won their 1st State Championship in the programs history. There are several other programs in the area that are doing well and producing excellent results. It will be exciting to watch as more and more teams realize they have the power!
